HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University softball team picked up a pair of wins at home for the first time this season and ended a four-game losing skid, as the Herd beat Cleveland State, 12-2, and Eastern Michigan, 8-3, in the opening round of the 2004 Ramada Marshall Softball Spring Classic on Friday.

Marshall 12, Cleveland State 2

A double to deep center field by Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) scored Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) for the Herd?s first score. Another double, this time by Allison Webb (Wayne, W.Va.) off the left field fence sent A. Williams home as the Herd took a 2-0 lead.

MU continued to hold the hot bat throughout the first, including a two-run Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) home run that pushed the Herd?s lead to 4-0 after only one inning of play.

After Lauren Scott (Hilliard, Ohio) singled and scored off a Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) single, A. Williams had a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Davenport and bringing up the Herd?s cleanup batter, Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.). Wintter connected for her third home run of the season and picked up two RBI in the process. A Webb RBI single stretched the lead to 7-0.

A. Williams knocked in her fourth run of the game in three innings of work with a one-out double up the middle, scoring Scott and J. Williams. Webb picked up her second hit of the game and MU moved to 10-2.

Tarah Mitchell (Shady Spring, W.Va.) picked up her first career hit, along with fellow freshman Jennifer Jones (Proctorvile, Ohio), in the bottom of the fourth as MU sent the game past the Mercy Rule, grabbing the win, 12-2.

Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) got the win on the mound after giving up two runs on four hits. She moves to 1-0 on the year. Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio) pitched one inning in relief.

Marshall 8, Eastern Michigan 3

Following a two inning 1-0 Eastern Michigan lead, Wintter let loose on another pitch to jump start the MU offense in the bottom of the third, as her three-run shot over the left field fence uplifted the Marshall lead to 4-1.

Eastern Michigan?s Nikki Denman homered to bring the lead within two, but Wilson launched her second home run of the day give MU the contest, 8-3, after the game was called due to inclement weather.

Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) is now 5-2 on the mound.

MU levels its record at 8-8 with the win, while Eastern Michigan slides to 2-6.
