MU will challenge for the 2004 Ramada Marshall Softball Spring Classic crown on Sunday. |
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? After taking a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh in the Herd?s first action on Saturday, the Marshall University softball team (9-9) captured the second game, 9-1, against Cleveland State in the 2004 Ramada Marshall Softball Spring Classic at Dot Hicks Field.
Pittsburgh 2, Marshall 0
Pittsburgh (6-8) held Marshall to only four hits in the contest as Panther pitcher Laura Belardinelli struck out three and didn?t give up a run.
Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) doubled for Marshall as Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) (5-3) took the loss, despite hurling a two-hitter.
Marshall 9, Cleveland State 1
Marshall threatened in the first after putting together three hits, but was unable to score until the top of the third inning when Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) was sent home via a throwing error by the Cleveland State pitcher for a 1-0 lead.
Then it was Wintter again, this time a three-run home run?her third of the tournament?to extend the MU lead to four.
MU kept up the strong offensive effort through the sixth with five hits and four runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run double from Kacenga, stretching the lead to the final, 9-0.
Pitcher Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Oreg.) got the win, her first of the season.
Marshall will play Eastern Michigan at noon on Sunday, along with a tournament cap against Pittsburgh scheduled for 4 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field.
All games on Sunday will continue as originally scheduled.
