- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Three costly errors by the Marshall University softball team led to a Miami (Ohio) Mid-American Conference win, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field.
Miami (Ohio) (18-19, 11-4) capitalized on two of those errors in the second inning. After Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) intentionally walked Leslie Macedo to load the bases for Jess Zogaib, an infield error scored two and put Marshall (27-20, 8-5) at a 2-0 disadvantage.
The RedHawks would move the score to 3-0 following a Kristen Hays RBI single in the third frame.
Marshall punched in its first run of the game in the third inning. Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled to left field and Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Nev.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move pinch-runner Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) to second. Adams advanced to third on a Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) ground out and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) registered her third RBI of 2004 with a single at the pitcher.
With the score 3-1, Davenport would set things in motion again in the sixth with a hit and a stolen base. An Amanda Williams? (Powder Springs, Ga.) ground out would then send her to third and a throwing error by RedHawk catcher Becca Garcia would send her home, putting the Herd one run down.
Another error by Marshall in the seventh did not prove costly and the Herd would have a last chance effort in the bottom of the inning when Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) advanced after a dropped third strike, but would fall short in the contest, 3-2.
Nielson took her second loss of the weekend after only giving up four hits. She falls to 12-11, while Jackie Poggendorf, with her second victory over the Herd, struck out 11 for her tenth win of the season.
?Randi pitched another great game today,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?She just didn?t have the support behind her or at the plate.?
Davenport added two more hits and keeps her 19-game hitting streak afloat. Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) and Guzzo tallied the other two hits for the Herd.
Marshall has little time to rest as it takes on MAC West-leading Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Mich., on Wednesday. The doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m.
