Herd Softball Takes on Toledo

4/2/2004

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University softball team will look to maintain a growing lead in the Mid-American Conference race as it welcomes the Toledo Rockets for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at Dot Hicks Field at 1 p.m.

Marshall (22-14, 4-0) has a pair of hitters boasting eight-game hitting streaks going into Saturday?s match-up with the Rockets. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) leads the Herd in hits with 42, while Amanda Williams? (Powder Springs, Ga.) .388 batting average is only one point under her senior counterpart. The Herd outfield paces the squad and the MAC in batting, as Davenport, A. Williams and left fielder Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) occupy the top three slots in hits.

MU is also making waves in the record book. Sophomore Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) now holds both the career (13) and single season (9) home run records, Davenport owns the career runs scored record (133) and A. Williams, in only her second year, possesses the RBI crown with 79.

Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) and Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) notched wins against Bowling Green on Wednesday. Nielson (10-7) won the first game for the Herd, while Chamberlain (5-1) picked up game two. Freshman right hander Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio) manages the best ERA on the MU mound at 1.50.

After dropping a 13-1 decision against Miami at home on Wednesday, Toledo (6-16, 1-3) will arrive in Huntington with only one player hitting over .300. Gina Muratori leads the Rockets in RBIs (8) and hits (19) as UT bats .229 as a team in 2004. Stephanie Moore (4-5) has a 2.77 ERA and brings the most dominant threat at the pitcher position for Toledo.
