- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Five errors doomed the Marshall University softball team as it fell to Kent State, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field to eliminate the Herd from playoff contention.
Marshall (31-27, 12-12) got in trouble early, as Kent State (26-18, 15-6) bashed out five runs on three critical errors in the first inning for a 5-0 lead. None of the five were earned for pitcher Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) as MU brought in freshman hurler Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio) who eventually got the Herd out of the dismal first frame.
Kent State would see errors hurt them in the third. Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) singled to left field and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) would follow with a bunt single of her own. Golden Flash pitcher Britney Robinson then walked Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) to load the bases. Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) punched in a RBI hit scoring twin sister Amanda and Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to score Davenport before pinch-runner Jennifer Jones (Proctorville, Ohio) was thrown out at home. Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) then picked up a couple RBIs , scoring J. Williams and Spenia cutting the deficit to one.
The Herd would get no closer.
With the score 5-4, Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) entered the game for Luers in the fourth and would give up a pair of runs to the Golden Flashes before Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) would be the fourth pitcher to enter the game for the Herd. Harter gave up five hits and one run in the next three innings as KSU?s lead surged to four.
A double from A. Williams started off hitting for the Herd in the seventh and she would score on a wild pitch, but the rally fell short, ending the season with a 8-5 loss.
The game also marked the end of the collegiate playing careers of the Herd?s three seniors?Wilson, Chamberlain and Davenport.
Nielson (13-17) was the losing pitcher after giving up three hits in the first inning. Robinson got the win for the Golden Flashes after tossing three frames, giving up seven hits.
The Williams duo led the Herd as Amanda was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Jessica, who will bring an 11-game hitting streak into next season, was 2-for-3with a run and a RBI.
