Women's Soccer To Play Three Games in Five Days
8/31/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? After playing a completely even weekend, giving up four goals and scoring four goals in a pair of ties, the Marshall women's soccer team is ready to boost its win column with home games on Wednesday and Friday against Morehead State and Cleveland State, respectively, and an away match versus Wright State on Sunday.
Marshall (0-0-2) picked up two ties in Philadelphia last weekend. Against La Salle on Friday, the Herd came from behind when Jen Short (Mentor, Ohio) netted a goal for a 1-1 tie. On Sunday, MU was able to rally after consecutive goals from Drexel found the Herd down by two. Goals by Ellerie Karl (Oakwood, Ohio) and Sara Burdick (Leicester, N.Y.) in the last 20 minutes of the contest salvaged the tie.
?I was pleased with our offensive output this weekend,? Kane said. ?All the mistakes we are making are very fixable.?
Senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.) had a MU-record 13 saves against La Salle and her six stops against Drexel on Sunday gave her the Herd career record for saves.
Marshall kicks off its two-game homestand with a game against interstate-rival Morehead State (1-1-0), a squad that beat Wright State last weekend and, according to MU head coach Chris Kane, is showing a lot of improvement from last season.
?Morehead looks much better,? Kane said. ?They have quite a few kids from this area that are chomping at the bit to get a shot at us.?
Friday night?s contest will be the first meeting of Cleveland State (0-2-0) and Marshall women?s soccer programs. CSU is in its first year of competition.
?CSU, being a first-year program, has something to prove,? Kane said. ?That is always dangerous.?
The Herd will then hit the road on Sunday to take on Wright State (1-1-0). MU tied the Raiders 0-0 on Sept. 19, 2003.
?Wright State beat Miami (Ohio) last weekend which is a good win," Kane said. "I think the returnees would definitely like to avenge the tie last season....it?s going to be a dogfight.?
This is one of two times this season that the Herd will have three games in five days.
?The first five games of the season basically are going to be a crash course in collegiate soccer for our freshmen,? Kane said. ?We can?t take anyone lightly because we simply do not have the right to.
?It is going to be a challenge because we have so many games in such a short period of time and I am excited to see how the team reacts.?
The home games versus Morehead and Cleveland State will start at 7 p.m. at Sam Hood Field and is free to the public. The Herd will play Wright State in Dayton at 7 p.m.
