- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall women?s soccer team won its first game at home since the 2002 season when it took down Morehead State, 2-1, at Sam Hood Field on Wednesday night.
Jen Short (Mentor, Ohio) started the goal scoring for the second time this season when she connected on an assist from sophomore Tracy Fischer (Dayton, Ohio) in the early part of the first half.
Marshall (1-0-2) then picked up another goal when freshman Jenna Greenwood (Westerville, Ohio) netted her first collegiate goal off a Katie Watson (Woodbridge, Va.) pass to give MU the 2-0 lead at the half.
But it was Morehead State (1-2-0) that would dominate much of the second half. The Eagles got a goal midway through the period after Rebekah Kendall sent a shot past Herd goalie Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.) to make the score 2-1. Woods, however, would come back big time. The senior notched seven saves in the final period to secure the win for the Herd.
?Thank God for Ashleigh tonight,? head coach Chris Kane said of Woods, who had 11 saves on the night. ?She pulled us out of the fire quite a few times.?
Kane, who got his first win at Sam Hood Field, wasn?t necessarily pleased with the play, but was happy to get the win.
?I think (Associate Athletic Director) Jeff O?Malley said it best when he said ?an ugly win is better than a pretty loss?,? Kane said. ?Morehead never quit and we need to learn that we got to play for 90 minutes.
?We?ll get back to the drawing board and work on Friday's game against Cleveland State.?
The Herd is back in action at home when it plays host to first-year program Cleveland State at Sam Hood Field at 7 p.m. on Friday. Admission is free to the public.
