HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? In a physical contest at Sam Hood Field on Friday night, defending Mid-American Conference tournament champion Western Michigan dropped the Marshall women?s soccer team, 2-0.

Western Michigan (3-1-0) registered both goals in the first half. Bronco forward Chelsea McNally went unassisted for the first score before Mandi Marsh took a Katie Ruzinsky pass for another goal to give the Broncos the 2-0 edge.

Marshall (2-2-2) came out seemingly flat and was only able to muster two shots in the first half.

?The girls that stepped on the field tonight we?re not excited to play,? head coach Chris Kane said. ?I was really disappointed about the way we came out.?

The game, which was Marshall?s first MAC contest at home this season, featured a large amount of fouls and penalty cards. MU committed 15 fouls in the game, including 11 in the second period and also received three yellow cards. The Broncos were dealt only seven fouls and one card.

The Herd was outshot by WMU 14-5 with Marshall goalie Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.) picking up nine saves.

Kane stressed the need for his team to be ready for the squad?s next game against Northern Illinois.

?This is where we find out what kind of character this team has,? Kane said. ?It is a very important game on Sunday because it is so important to win home conference games. Away wins in the MAC are hard to come by.?

The Huskies of NIU will battle the Herd at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Sam Hood Field. Fans are welcome to stay after the game for autographs from the players.
