HUNTINGTON, W.Va.? Marshall fell to Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field in Mid-American Conference women?s soccer action.

For the second straight contest, Marshall (2-3-2; 0-2-0 MAC) looked shaky offensively in the first half. After only managing two shots in the first period against Western Michigan on Friday, the Herd?s Ellerie Karl (Oakwood, Ohio) was the lone shot-getter in the first 45 minutes on Sunday.

A collision with Marshall?s Kate Heilich (Columbia, S.C.), a pair of NIU players and Herd goalie Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.) in the first period sent Woods to the sideline for the remainder of the game.

It was then that NIU registered the only goal of the match?a Jamie Figura score off a Beth Matus pass with nearly 30 minutes remaining in the second period?on Herd back-up Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn.).

?I think the score was indicative of how we played,? head coach Chris Kane said. ?I think Kai did a good job?we feel confident in her. They outplayed us today? We?ve got to focus and come out with more intensity.?

Northern Illinois (4-0-1, 1-0-1 MAC) outshot the Herd 15-5 in the contest. Jamie Gruber (Hudson, Ohio) and Karl each had two shots a piece.

?The second half was more intense,? Gruber said. ?We had more chances, but we?ve just got to start scoring. Hopefully, we will have a good week of practice and come back ready to go for Friday.?

Woods registered five saves before leaving the game, while reigning Co-MAC Player of the Week Carrie Dvorak had two.

Kane, who was without three starters prior to Sunday?s kickoff, said the injury bug is no excuse for the squad?s performance.

?Injuries are a part of the game,? he said. ?They are things that we need to deal with and we can?t use it as an excuse.?

The Herd has four days off before trekking to northwest Ohio for games at Toledo and Bowling Green on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
