BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd tennis team thundered through its opening match of the 2005 season with a 7-0 win over the University of Cincinnati, Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
"It's good to get off to a solid start with the win today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "I think we played good doubles to start out, which was exciting with all new teams we put out there. I thought Cincinnati was a really solid team that really made us earn our points. Fortunately, we were able to play consistent enough to win and we're looking forward to building on what we started today and looking to improve as the season goes along."
Marshall got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles point against the Bearcats to claim a 1-0 lead. The No. 60 ranked tandem of Danielle Hock (Wigan, England) and Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland), picked up an 8-2 win from the No. 1 spot over the combo of Hannah Hinton and Samantha Liu. At No. 2, All-American Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) defeated Cristina Reyes and Julie Klauck 8-2 and Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) teamed with freshman Shannon Brown (Overland Park, Kan.) for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, the Herd continued to control the action with Kroh putting on a dominating display against Reyes at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win to give Marshall a 2-0 advantage in the match. Schwartz put the Herd up 3-0 with her victory at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Brown. Good was victorious at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-4 over Jill Klauck to secure the win for the Herd at 4-0. Nzudie, Hock and Alizee Paradis (Quebec City, Canada) also picked up victories on the day to wrap up the score at 7-0 over the Bearcats.
"I thought that we all showed up and played a solid match against Cincinatti," Kroh said. "I think our freshman especially played well since it was their first time out. Hopefully we'll play well again later tonight and improve in each match we play. If we do I think we're going to be a great team by the end of the year."
Marshall is now 1-0 on the season and the will play host to the Pittsburgh Panthers at 7 p.m. tonight at the Huntington Tennis Club.
