Kent State Defeats Marshall Men, 75-66

KENT, Ohio ? Golden Flashes center Kevin Warzynski scored a career-high 20 points to lead Kent State to a 75-66 win over the Thundering Herd Saturday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
Marshall drops to 3-13, 0-7 in the MAC, while Kent State improves to 13-6, 5-3 in the conference.
After both teams battled back and forth for the first seven minutes, the Golden Flashes put together a 30-10 run to end the first half and led at the intermission, 42-22. Kent State shot 56.7% in the first half, and 50% from beyond-the-arc, compared to only 30% for the Thundering Herd (9-30) and 22.2% from three-point land. Marshall had several offensive put-backs rim out, and the Herd could not get the ball to ripple through the net on several other close-in opportunities in the first twenty minutes.
The 20-point lead ended up being too large for Marshall to overcome, but the Herd out-played the Golden Flashes in the second half and closed the Kent State advantage to six points, 67-61, with 1:58 remaining in regulation. However, on KSU?s subsequent possession down the floor, Golden Flashes forward Jason Edwin ended an 11 minute KSU field goal drought with a three-pointer to push the Kent State lead to 70-61.
In the second half, the Herd out-scored the Golden Flashes 44-33, out-rebounded KSU 27-15, and out-shot the home team 46.9% to 29.6%.
Marshall was led by A.W. Hamilton (Georgetown, Ky.), who tied a career-high with 20 points. Tre Whitted (Wilmington, N.C.) tallied 18 points, and Mark Patton (Barboursville, W.Va.) put together his third double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Freshman Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) also scored six points and grabbed a career-high ten boards for the Herd.
Kent State was led by Warzynski?s 20 points. Jason Edwin added 17 points, and Armon Gates tallied 11 points to close out the Golden Flashes double-digit scorers.
The Herd?s next contest is at Buffalo on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
