HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? After opening the season with a pair of 7-0 wins over the weekend against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, the Thundering Herd tennis team heads to Lexington, Ky., Tuesday for a bout with the Kentucky Wildcats at 1 p.m.
The No. 60 ranked Herd will be tested by the No. 14 team in the nation. The Wildcats feature some of the top players in the nation and will provide an early season challenge along with a measuring stick for Marshall.
?It?s going to be a tough match,? Marshall head coach John Mercer said. ?They?ve had a great run in the last few years and are one of the top teams in the nation. We always look forward to playing them and testing to see where we are on the national scale.?
Kentucky features the No. 7, 30 and 58 ranked singles players in the nation in Aibika Kalsarieva, Sarah Foster and Kim Coventry, respectively. In doubles, the Wildcats boast the No. 6 ranked duo in Kalsarieva and Foster, along with the No. 11 pair of Joelle Schwenk and Coventry.
Marshall?s duo of Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) and Danielle Hock (Wigan, England) are ranked No. 60 in the nation, as the only Herd players ranked in the ITA poll.
Last season in Huntington, the Wildcats downed the Herd 5-2 in Marshall?s season opener. Marshall is 2-0 this season and it will be the first match of the year for Kentucky. The Wildcats will then play the Herd?s next opponent, Louisville at 6 p.m. The Herd hosts Louisville on Feb. 4.
