HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University swimming and diving team fell to Mid-American Conference foe Ohio on Saturday 126-172 in the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
Junior Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) led the Thundering Herd (9-3, 3-3 MAC) with top finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.28), the 100-yard butterfly (56.95) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.82). Cara Davison (So., Chesterton, Ind.) added a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.69) and a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (54.77).
"We had some really good swims today," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus. "Unfortunately we let a fantastic team get off to a good start and we were unable to overcome the deficit."
The freshman duo of Danielle Chappelle (London, Ontario) and Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn.) added second (10:29.30) and third (10:30.49) place points for the Herd in the 1000-yard freestyle, respectively.
On the boards sophomore Casey Mulholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored first in the 1-meter event (234.30) and second in the 3-meter (222.75). Freshman Gina Sylvester (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed fourth in both events with scores of 190.42 in the 1-meter and 198.75 in the 3-meter.
The Bobcats (7-1-1, 3-1-1 MAC) were led by Michaela Hahn-Lawson who finished in the top spot in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.28) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.82). Ilse Petersen contributed to the Ohio victory with first place points in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.92) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.36).
"We have to reload and get ready for next weekend," said Kraus. "We have to get back into the winning frame of mind so we can be ready for those meets and the conference championships."
The Herd will wrap up the MAC regular season next weekend against Ball State on Friday and Miami on Saturday. Both meets are home events.
