KENT, Ohio ? Kent State continued its dominance at home versus Marshall by picking up a 78-62 win over the Thundering Herd women?s basketball team on Saturday at the M.A.C. Center.
Kent State (8-5, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) governed play throughout the second half after a choppy first stanza to extend its record to 9-0 at home versus the Thundering Herd (5-7, 0-2 MAC). The Golden Flashes scorched the nets after halftime (61.8 percent), led by All-MAC forward Lindsay Shearer?s 15 points and 3-for-4 effort from 3-point range. Shearer finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Back-to-back treys by KSU to open the second half sent the Flashes on a 13-6 run to push Bob Lindsay?s squad to its first MAC win of the year. Three other Flashes joined Shearer in double-figures with Melissa DeGrate?s18 points, 11 from Kerrie James and 10 from Tiffany LaFleur.
Marshall sophomore Crystal Champion (Washington, D.C.) grabbed a game- and career-high 18 rebounds. Champion?s total is the sixth best single-game mark in Marshall history and most since Catie Knable posted the same amount last season at Ohio. Champion added 12 points for her third double-double of the season.
Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (Houston, Texas) scored a game-high 25 points and was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. As a team, Marshall was 26-of-34 from the charity stripe.
The first half was an offensive struggle as Kent State entered the break up 22-21. Both teams shot under 30 percent from the field, with Marshall beginning the game 1-for-14, with a combined 21 turnovers. Shepard-Hall carried the bulk of the scoring for the Herd in the first frame, netting 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The junior was twice fouled on made layups and converted the free throw each time.
Marshall out-rebounded Kent State 47-38.
Marshall will take a brief one-game break from MAC play to face intrastate rival West Virginia on Tuesday at the Charleston Civic Center. Tip-off for the women?s game is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men?s game to follow.
