BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Michaela Sceli (LaSalle, Ontario) broke the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke, leading the Marshall Thundering Herd women's swimming and diving team to a season-opening win at Radford, 153-120, Friday at the Dedmon Center.
The Herd (1-1) later dropped a 126-92 decision at Virginia Tech (2-0) Saturday.
Sceli set a new school record with a clocking of 2:26.11 in the 200-yard breaststroke en route to winning the event over the Highlanders (0-1). She also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.23. Sceli was the only multi-event winner at Radford.
"Michaela had a superb weekend in the breaststroke," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "We knew she would make an immediate impact for us."
Freshmen Kyla Jungclaus (Brownstown, Ind.) and Kayla Truswell (London, Ontario) each won their first collegiate event. Jungclaus won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.72, while Truswell was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.69.
"It is very important for freshmen like Kayla (Truswell) and Kyla (Jungclaus) to contribute early and I think she had a really strong performance this weekend," Kraus added.
Senior diver Casey Mulholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.) won both the one and three-meter diving events at Radford. Mulholland scored 233.55 in the one-meter, while carding a 220.34 in the three-meter event.
Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.30, while finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly behind Radford freshman Agnes Mago in a time of 2:04.64.
Other individual winners for the Herd at Radford included Danielle Chappelle (London, Ontario) in the 1000-yard freestyle and Emily Edmonson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the 50-yard freestyle.
The Herd combo of Kuurto, Edmonson, Renee Lambert and Jungclaus won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:42.44.
At Virginia Tech, Sceli won her third breaststroke event in two days, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.30. Kim Becker (St. Louis, Mo.) finished second with a time of 1:09.45, while Erin Hill (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Emily Moe (Rockford, Mich.) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Brunette won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:22.42, while Chappelle finished second in the event with a timing of 5:25.36.
Kuurto won the 100-yard butterfly with a timing of 55.87.
Mulholland won the three-meter diving with a score of 234.15 - her second win in the three-meter in as many days.
Marshall's 200-yard freestyle relay tandem of Kuurto, Edmonson, Lambert and Jungclaus finished first with a time of 1:40.08.
"I thought we swam strong all weekend," Kraus said, "but we are not where we want to be after two meets."
"Virginia Tech is a great team," Kraus continued. "They are every bit as good on paper as they are in the pool."
The Marshall Thundering Herd will return to action Saturday, Oct. 15 when it travels to Cincinnati to face Xavier at the O'Connor Sports Complex.
