HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Jalissa Covington signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Marshall University, Thundering Herd head coach Royce Chadwick announced today, completing the program's early signing period recruiting class.

Covington, a 6-foot-4 forward, hails from Detroit, Mich., where she attends Northern High School. The All-Star Girls Report, a prominent scouting service, ranks Covington as the No. 25 forward and the No. 101 overall player in the nation. She is the highest rated player that Chadwick has ever signed.

"Jalissa is one of the top players that I've ever been associated with at the high school level," Chadwick said. "She will be a difference maker in our program. She is a big, big-time player and we're very excited to have her join us."

Covington averaged a double-double (points, rebounds) as a prep star and has attended the Nike All-American Camp and the Adidas Top-Ten Camp. She was recruited by West Virginia, Illinois, Louisville and Northwestern.

Covington joins Chapel Hill, N.C., product Alix Barnette as the Herd's early signees.

Marshall opens the 2005-06 regular season on Friday versus Tennessee State in the Fifth Third MU Classic. The Herd will take on either Ohio or S.C. State in day two action on Saturday.
