RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico - Freshman Jene Morris scored 19 points to lead California past the Marshall women's basketball team, 62-53, in the opening game of the 2005 Caribbean Classic at the Aventura Spa Palace Resort.
Morris' seven points in a two-and-a-half minute span brought the Golden Bears back from down two to up six points in a momentum swing that left Marshall scratching its heads. The Herd (2-1) was up 39-37 with 7:15 left in the second half when Morris hit a free throw before scoring back-to-back field goals, the second off a Renee Wright steal as the Herd was trying to get the ball past half court.
Marshall turnovers and foul trouble ultimately doomed the Herd's chance at its first ever win over a Pac-10 team. MU turned the ball over 19 times and committed 23 fouls to send the Golden Bears to the free-throw line on 30 occasions (19-of-30). The Herd, meanwhile, was only 8-of-13 from the charity stripe.
Cal (4-1) also received a double-digit effort from another freshman, Ashley Walker, who scored 12 points. Wright netted 10 points with 10 rebounds.
The Herd's Modupe Ishola (Washington, D.C.) scored 16 points while senior guard Mary Pat Statler (New Cumberland, W.Va.) recorded 12 points, aided by a 2-of-2 effort from behind the arc.
Herd junior forward KaShawna Curry (Huntington, W.Va.) left the game at the 6:38 mark of the first half with an injured ankle. She did not return and is not expected to compete the rest of the weekend.
Marshall will take on the defending NCAA champion Baylor Lady Bears at 2:40 PM EST on Sunday in its final Caribbean Classic contest. Baylor will take on Cal on Saturday before facing the Herd.
