Herd in Fourth Place After First Day of Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - Led by sophomores Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Jessica Prater (South Point, Ohio/Grace Christian), the Marshall Thundering Herd women's swimming and diving team sits in fourth place after the first day of competition at the Miami Invitational.
The first-place University of Denver Pioneers finished the first day with 196 points, followed by Kenyon College (114), Conference USA member Houston (103) and Marshall (88). Oakland University is in fifth place with 87 points while host Miami University is in ninth place with 69 points.
McIlvain, who finished 11th in the 1650-yard freestyle, recorded a season- and career-best in the event with a time of 17:32.08.
"Ashley (McIlvain) had a strong swim today," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "It was good to see everyone come together at this point."
Prater swam a season-best at the 500-yard mark (5:18.93) and a career-best at the 1000-yard mark (10:45.00) en route to a 17:57.31 clocking in the 1650-yard freestyle.
Danielle Chappelle (London, Ontario/Central Secondary) clocked in at 10:44.93 at the 1000-yard mark on her way to a 20th-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:54.06).
Sarah Brunette (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) recorded a season- and career-best in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:00.57.
"Hopefully, we can continue to build on a strong showing this weekend and let it carry over to the spring semester."
Marshall's 800-yard freestyle relay tandem of Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland/Lohja), Emily Edmonson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Prep), Kyla Jungclaus (Brownstown, Ind./Seymour) and McIlvain posted a season-best time with 7:45.19.
Day two of the Miami Invitational begins with prelims Friday at 9 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
