HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Ohio guard Mychal Green paced four Bobcat players in double-figures in route to an 83-62 victory over the Thundering Herd Saturday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
Ohio improves to 16-9, 10-6 in the MAC, while Marshall drops to 5-20, 2-14 in league play.
In the 90th and final regular season meeting between the two schools at members of the Mid-American Conference, the Bobcats jumped out on the Herd early and never looked back. Ohio scored on a jumper by Jeremy Fears at the 17:51 mark to make the score 7-5, and from then on, the Bobcats never trailed. Ohio led 44-32 at the half, and in the second half, the Bobcats? lead ballooned to as many as 24 points.
The Bobcats were on fire from the floor for the game, knocking down 63.6% of their shots, with many coming on driving lay-ups and other easy opportunities in the paint. Ohio scored 50 points in the paint, compared to only 28 for Marshall, in the telling statistic of the contest.
Meanwhile, the Herd struggled to find the basket, especially from long range. Marshall shot 34.3% from the field, and only 6-of-32 from beyond-the-arc (18.8%). In the second half, the Herd was even worse from three, knocking in only 2-of-16 shots (12.5%).
For Marshall, Mark Patton (Barboursville, W.Va.) led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward David Anderson (Levittown, P.R.) was four-of-four from the field and added ten points.
Mychal Green led the Ohio effort with 17 points, with Leon Williams adding 14 points and 12 rebounds, his seventh double-double of the season. Sonny Troutman and Jeremy Fears each added 11 points for Ohio.
The Herd makes its final regular season road trip this Wednesday to Akron, Ohio, to take on the Akron Zips. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
