BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Penn State Nittany Lions handed the Marshall Thundering Herd a 4-3 loss in women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club.
The day didn't get off to a very good start for the Herd as it dropped the doubles point losing at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles after leading in both matches.
From there, the Herd rebounded with wins at No. 2, 3 and 4 in singles from repsective seniors Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland), Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) and Danielle Hock (Wigan, England).
Penn State then went on to win at No. 1 and No. 6 to tie the match at 3-3 with the deciding point coming down to the action on court five.
Herd freshman Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) lost the first set 6-4, but battled from behind in the second to take a 5-4 lead. Penn State's Katelyn Bevard fought back to a 6-5 advantage, but Schwartz again climbed back to force a tiebreaker. After swapping points for nearly 20 minutes, Bevard fought off four set points to claim the second set and the match for the Nittany Lions.
Marshall dropped to 5-5 on the season with the loss and Penn State improved to 4-3 on the year. Sunday's match was the Herd's last home match until April 8 when it hosts the Miami Redhawks in Mid-American Conference action.
The Herd hits the road to take on the Richmond Spiders this Friday.
