LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? A trio of two-run innings and three Herd home runs helped elevate the Marshall softball team over future Conference USA opponent UTEP, 6-1, on Saturday night at Jim Rogers Field.
In the second inning, back-to-back singles by Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) put two on with one out. An error by a Miner centerfielder allotted Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Nev.) on and loaded the bases. The Herd was unable to capitalize and two batters later the score remained tied at one heading into the bottom of the frame. UTEP stranded three of its own sending the game to the fourth inning at zeros.
Then the came the slug fest.
Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) hit her second home run of the day, scoring Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) to put the Herd ahead by a pair in the third.
ThenLeigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) followed up with her second long ball of the day in the top of the fifth sending Folden home and providing Marshall with a four-run cushion.
The third home run of the game for Marshall (3-1) came via a line drive shot over the left field fence for Guzzo. The home run was the first in the sophomore?s career. Kacenga followed up with a double and Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) drove in the sixth run of the game with a single to right.
Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) garnered her second win of the year. Harter gave up only two runs in seven innings of work on the Herd mound. Renee DiPuccio took the loss for UTEP (0-4).
MU rounds out competition in Las Vegas tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. PST against Indiana.
