LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? After trailing 2-0 after two innings, the Marshall softball team rallied up ten runs to defeat Indiana, 10-2, on Sunday morning in its final game of the UNLV Tournament.
MU (4-1) fell early as the Hoosiers (1-4) picked up two runs in the first inning off Herd starting pitcher Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio).
But the Herd would use heavy offensive production third and fourth to take the lead.
Consecutive doubles by Deanna Tourville (Rescue, Calif.) and Amanda and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) gave MU two runs before freshman Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) followed up with an RBI single to give MU the slight edge. The RBI was Folden?s sixth of the weekend.
Marshall would pile on three more runs in the fourth frame after a Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Virginia) home run and a two-run double by A. Williams put the score at 6-2.
J. Williams converted a strategically hit slap bunt to short right field to score Tarah Mitchell (Shady Springs, W.Va.) in the bottom of the sixth. Singles by Folden and Ashlee Nichol (Washington, Pa.) gave the Herd three more and relinquished the game at 10-2 due to the mercy rule.
Luers picked up her first win of the year.
"That is not the way we want to start a game," head coach Shonda Stanton said. "But it is good to see that once we got the momentum, we never lost it...it was a good way to end the weekend and a complete team effort."
The Herd heads to Alabama next weekend for the Auburn Invitational. The tournament consists of stints against Northwestern State, College of Charleston and Auburn before beginning bracket play on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
