CLEVELAND ? After finishing a disappointing fifth in the East last season, the Marshall softball team has been selected to finish second in the division in the Mid-American Conference Preseason poll released today.
Marshall, who is fresh off a four-win weekend at UNLV last weekend, went 31-27 in 2004 including a 12-12 conference record. The Herd returns nearly every starter from that team including first team all-conference honorees Amanda and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) .
?It is nice to be respected by the other coaches in the league,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?But we realize that conference championships are not determined by polls but by play.?
The Herd is picked to finish behind Miami (Ohio) while Kent State slides in at the third spot. In the West, Central Michigan was picked first in front of Bowling Green and Western Michigan, respectively. The RedHawks were selected to win the tournament.
MU participates in the Auburn Tiger Invitational this weekend. The Herd takes on the Demons of Northwestern State at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
