COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After getting the day off on Saturday, Ohio State came out swinging on Sunday, registering 14 hits in a 14-7 win against the Marshall softball team in the finale of the Buckeye Invitational.
The Buckeyes batted around the order in the first, registering five runs on five hits, including three doubles, for a commanding 5-0 lead. That led MU to go to the bullpen as starting pitcher Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) exited for fellow sophomore Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio). Luers surrendered another run in the second and a wild pitch allotted one more in the fourth.
Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) singled to start off the bottom of the fourth for Marshall. Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) reached on an error a batter later to put runners on first and second for Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.). Wintter, after registering the game-winning home run against Notre Dame last night, picked up another RBI with a single through the left side to score J. Williams and edge the score to 7-1.
OSU tallied another run in the following frame, but Marshall would win the battle of the fifth after a pair of errors and a single from J. Williams scored Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) and Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) for an 8-3 ball game.
A walk, a single and a fielder?s choice in the sixth gave Ohio State another pair as the score moved to 10-3 in favor of the host squad. Luers hit a batter and walked another to load the bases for Christina Douglas. Douglas would make the Herd pay, launching a shot deep over the right field fence for a grand slam and a massive 11-run lead.
MU would not die, however, picking up three runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Deanna Tourville (Rescue, Calif.) tallied the first triple of her collegiate career and A. Williams followed with a RBI single. J. Williams tallied her third hit of the game, this time a double, a batter later and Folden also doubled, her fourth of the tournament. Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled in Folden for the fourth run of the frame. Despite the gutsy seventh inning drive, the Herd would fall short and pick up its ninth loss of 2005.
Harter (4-3) took the loss on the mound for Marshall while Jamee Juarez garnered the win, her tenth, for the Buckeyes.
The Herd placed three players on the all-tournament team, including Folden, A. Williams, and pitcher Randi Nielson.
"We are happy with the weekend and the way that our team never let down," head coach Shonda Stanton said. "Offensively, we showed a lot of consistency throughout the lineup."
MU returns to action on Tuesday and Wednesday as it travels to the Bluegrass State for doubleheaders at Louisville and Kentucky, respectively.
