LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky utilized a tremendous fourth inning to defeat the Marshall softball team, 9-0, on Wednesday night in game two of the doubleheader at the UK Softball Complex.
A bases loaded two-out jam presented starter Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) with a problem in the fourth, but Herd third baseman Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) snagged a line drive to get Marshall out of the frame unscathed.
In the bottom of the fourth, Harter wasn?t as fortunate as Gina Florence scored on a single by Alli Eckman with two outs. Following a walk to Amber Janneck, Ashley Fertic drove home the second run in the inning for the Wildcats as forced Harter from the game. Veronica Ralston (Tucson, Ariz.) entered the game in relief with the bases loaded after Jessica Nance drew a two-out walk from Harter.
Ralston walked clean-up hitter Meghan Cooper to give the ?Cats a 3-0. Brooke Marnitz then extended the inning and gave UK(14-22) a 5-0 lead after a single through the left side score a pair of Wildcats. After batting around with two outs, Florence looped a single over third base to load the bases once again, and Jenny Sibert smacked a single into left field to make it 6-0. Ralston then gave up a bases loaded walk to Lori Melchi, posting the ?Cats 7th run on the board. Eckman then added onto the onslaught with a single to center, scoring two to push the lead to 9-0. Wintter ended the damaging inning by putting away a slow roller by Janneck to third.
MU (14-11) collected four hits in the loss. Harter falls to 4-4 in 2005 while Samantha Allen picked up her 10th win of the year.
"We are very disappointed in our effort today," Head Coach Shonda Stanton said. "We need to get ourselves ready for this weekend and the beginning of MAC play."
Marshall looks ahead to conference action when the Buffalo Bulls come to Huntington on Friday.
