LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Despite out-hitting its opponent, the Marshall softball team dropped game one to the University of Kentucky, 2-0, at the UK Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
UK got its first score of the game in the second inning when Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) hit one batter with a pitch and allowed two singles before walking in one for a 1-0 score.
The Wildcats would manage another run in the second after Nielson scattered three hits, but maintained damage control by forcing a fly-out to end the inning with three stranded.
Marshall (14-10) out-hit the Wildcats 9-6 in the contest, led by three hits from freshman Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.).
Nielson (8-5) picked up the complete game loss after surrendering two runs on six hits. Meghan Cooper garnered the win and moves to 4-11 this season.
The Herd will square off with the Wildcats again at 5 p.m. in game two of the doubleheader.
