Churchill Finishes Rio Verde Invitational in Sixth Place

RIO VERDE, Ariz. ? Marshall sophomore Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio) shot an 11 over par (82) in Saturday?s final round of the East/West Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational to finish the three-round tournament in a three-way tie for sixth place. The Rio Verde Country Club played host to the 18-team event, the Thundering Herd?s first of 2005.

Churchill paced the field after two rounds and entered Saturday?s final round with a two-stroke lead. After an opening even round on Thursday, Churchill shot three over par on Friday but bogeyed her first five holes in the final round to fall out of contention. She finished the tournament 14 over par (71, 74, 82) with a final score of 227.

Michigan?s Laura Olin started the round in a three-way tie in second place behind Churchill, but the Wolverine golfer shot an even final round to take first place with a 218 (five over par). Liz Bennett of Iowa shot two over par today to finish in second place at 220 (seven over par).

As a team, the Thundering Herd finished in 14th place, 112 over par, with a score of 964 (320, 315, 329). Michigan won the tournament at 48 over par (900), followed by Iowa and Minnesota in second and third place.

Herd sophomore Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.) was Marshall?s next highest finisher with a final score of 240 (+27), tied for 42nd. Her best round was Saturday?s final round as she shot a 10 over par.

Up next for the Herd is the St. Croix Collegiate Classic in the Virgin Islands from March 11-13.
