HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall softball team will round up its 10-game homestand this weekend when it takes on Mid-American Conference opponent Akron in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Dot Hicks Field.
MU (17-12, 2-1) defeated Eastern Kentucky, 2-0, on Wednesday in a one-game affair in Huntington. Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) tossed a one-hitter in seven innings on the mound for her tenth victory of the year. Sophomore Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) cranked her fifth home run of 2005 in the fourth inning to give the Herd some extra padding in the score column.
The Herd is led by the likes of freshman Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) and reigning MAC East Player of the Week Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.). Folden boasts a MAC-best .451 batting average, 40 hits, 28 RBI and 61 total bases. A. Williams is tops in runs (22) and second in hits (37) and total bases (53). The MAC home run race lingers on at Dot Hicks Field this weekend with Akron?s Kelly Quigley (8), Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) (6), Guzzo (5) and Folden (4) all scheduled to take swings in the series. The Herd possesses all three top slots in accordance to stolen bases as Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.), Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) and A. Williams are one, two, three in swiped bags.
Akron (13-11, 1-3) comes into the weekend series fresh off a 1-1 performance versus Western Michigan on Wednesday in Akron. The Broncos took game one, 1-0 while UA managed to garner a win in the second contest, 4-3. Quigley paces the Zip offensive attack with a .333 batting average, 24 hits and 21 RBI. Sara Zilles backs up that performance with a pretty steady one of her own, racking up a .324 batting average. Senior mainstay Tina McCauley leads the pitching staff with a conference-best 1.54 ERA while ranking second in strikeouts with 96. The all-time series sits in favor of UA at 18-7. The Zips took two of three last season in Akron.
