Huskie Softball Heads To Huntington Wednesday
Herd Plays NIU in Cross-Divisional Doubleheader

4/19/2005

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall softball team will take on Northern Illinois in a cross-divisional doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field in Mid-American Conference action.

Marshall (26-14, 11-3) needs one more win to match its conference victory total last season. The Herd took its fourth East Division series last weekend, downing Ohio in two of three in Huntington. MU fell in its first extra inning affair of the year in the series opener, 9-11, before regrouping to take the final two contests, 2-1 and 8-6. Dee Tourville (Rescue, Calif.) led the Herd both on the field and at the plate, going 5-for-10 at bat and 11-for-11 in the field, including a number of nice backhand grabs up the middle to help the Herd cling to its top spot in the East. On the mound, Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) went 2-1 and was quite impressive in her wins. In those games, the sophomore held the Bobcats to a .118 batting average while giving up only four hits, one earned run, eight strikeouts and one walk in 10 1/3 innings in the circle.

Northern Illinois (20-19, 5-7) is one of the more unfamiliar MAC opponents for the Herd. The pair has not squared off since 2003 and the all-time series sits in favor of the Huskies, 5-3. This season, NIU is paced by Ellen Stoddard offensively and Lindsey LaChiana on the mound. Stoddard is the lone Huskie above the .300 mark, batting a steady .338 while LaChiana boasts a 1.71 ERA to coincide with a 12-10 record and 121 strikeouts.

Marshall possesses a one-game lead over Miami (Ohio) in the East Division, while Central Michigan sits on top of the MAC with a 10-1 league record.

All games at Dot Hicks Field are free to the public.
