Softball Battles Bowling Green at 2 p.m.

4/21/2005

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall softball team will take a brief break from league action in a unique way by challenging Bowling Green, winners of the 2004 Mid-American Conference tournament, in a one-game non-conference affair on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field. The game has been moved up two hours to 2 p.m., from its original start time of 4 p.m., to counter possible inclement weather.

Marshall (28-14, 13-3) dropped Northern Illinois in a cross-divisional match-up on Wednesday afternoon in Huntington, 1-0 and 3-0. A solo home run by Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) gave MU its lone score in game one?s win while Herd hurler Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) tossed a three-hit shutout in game two for the sweep.

A team that got hot at the end of last season, Bowling Green (22-24, 7-5) dropped both games to the Herd in 2004 but managed to snag the eighth slot and consequently make an amazing run through the tournament that eventually resulted in a MAC Championship. The Falcons lost only one starter from that squad and return standouts Gina Rango and Liz Vrabel. Rango and Folden have been battling for the top slot in batting average all season. Rango boasts a .403 average with 52 hits and 30 RBI to lead the Falcon attack. She in the lone player batting above .300, while the team as a whole hits at a .243 mark. Vrabel sees the most action in the circle with a 13-10 record in 30 appearances. The senior has a 2.08 ERA with 166 strikeouts.

The all-time series sits in favor of BGSU, 17-4.

All games at Dot Hicks Field are free to the public.
