HAMILTON, Ohio ? Marshall sophomore Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio) was one of six players to be named to the All-Mid-American Conference first team at this weekend?s MAC Women?s Golf Championships.
Churchill, who led the Herd at the 2005 championships in a tie for 12th place with score of (77-81) 158, is the first Marshall player to ever garner All-MAC first team honors. She collected four top-10 finishes this spring, including a career-best third place at the Indiana Invitational on April 3, and finished competition this season with a 77.88 stroke average.
?Amber has continually progressed in her time here at Marshall,? Herd head coach Meredith Knight said. ?She has the total package in terms of talent and it?s nice to see her hard work and determination recognized with this honor.
?As only a sophomore, she?ll be a player to watch over her final two years at Marshall and beyond.?
Churchill finished in 11th place as a freshman at last season?s MAC Championships. Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.) was selected to the All-MAC second team a year ago after being named the 2004 MAC Freshman of the Year.
Fellow sophomore Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.) joined Churchill as an award recipient this weekend. Mahar was named the MAC Sportswoman of the Year, given annually by her peers to the player most worthy of representing women?s intercollegiate golf to others.
Kent State won its seventh consecutive team title with a total of 610 after the MAC Championships were limited to just 36 holes due to unplayable course conditions due to weather. Marshall finished in eighth with a score of 658. Ball State?s Katie Sundberg, also a member of the All-MAC first team, won the event with a score of (72-77) 149.
Kent State's Gabby Wedding was named MAC Golfer of the Year, while teammate Tara Delaney was named Freshman of the Year.
