Guzzo Solo Shot Lifts Softball Over Eagles

  • Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? A Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) solo home run in the bottom of the second inning lifted the Marshall softball team over Eastern Michigan, 1-0, in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday evening.

Marshall (31-17, 16-3 MAC) gathered five hits in the contest, including two by Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.), but the story of the game was the pitching dual that ensued.

Herd senior Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) held the Eagle attack to a mere two hits in seven innings on the mound while striking out five in the shutout win, her 17th of the year. Eagle pitcher Aimee Woodrum comprised an impressive outing of her own, giving up only five hits and one run to the MAC?s top offensive squad.

Eastern Michigan (13-19, 9-9 MAC) did not lack in baserunners, however, leaving eight stranded, including a bases loaded, two-out throw down by Folden to catch the runner at second and get the Herd out of the inning unscathed.

The Herd will take on the Eagles in a doubleheader tomorrow at Dot Hicks Field at noon. Nielson will be honored as MU?s lone senior prior to game two.
