OXFORD, Ohio ? The Marshall softball team took game one from Miami (Ohio), 2-1, but a seventh inning comeback came up short in game two as the Herd fell, 3-2, at Miami Softball Field in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Game One
Marshall 2, Miami (Ohio) 1

The Herd used a stingy defense in game one on Saturday en route to a 2-1 victory against Miami (Ohio).

After giving up only one walk in the last 37 innings, Jackie Poggendorf walked the first batter of the game, Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) and would pay for it as she scored off a Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) RBI single to give the Herd the early 1-0 lead.

Williams turned her attention to the field that same inning, grabbing a deep fly ball and hurling it to third to catch a RedHawk runner for the double play. In the bottom of the second, Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) showed some heroics of her own making a diving catch before getting the runner at first for the Herd?s second double play in two innings.

Marshall scored its other run in the third frame after Folden doubled off the centerfield fence and Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) followed suite with a double of her own for a 2-0 contest.

Miami (Ohio) threatened in the sixth after Poggendorf singled to load the bases for a Bianca Paz sacrifice fly at a 2-1 score. The RedHawks would get no further, however, as starting pitcher Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz. was able to get the Herd out of any more trouble and scoop up win number twelve. The senior gave up five hits in seven innings and struck out six.

Game Two
Miami (Ohio) 3, Marshall 2

Despite a two-run seventh inning rally, Marshall fell just short in game two, 3-2, against Miami (Ohio).

After two and a half scoreless innings, Miami got on the board first after a walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball made way for a Halle Popson RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, Breanna Robinson singled and was sacrificed to second via a bunt and third on a fly as Marshall intentionally walked Paz. A first and third play gone wrong ensued as catcher Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) threw over third baseman Wintter?s head for another RedHawk run. Jessica Moore singled in Paz for the Miami?s last score of the game.

In the seventh, Guzzo doubled off the fence and an error moved her pinch-runner Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga.) to third and Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, Nev.) to first, as a Sam Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif.) grounder scored Mitchell for run number one. Dee Tourville (Rescue, Calif.) singled to score Spenia to cut the lead to within one, but starting pitcher Courtney Salmon was able to pick up her fourth strikeout of the game.

Marshall was held to three hits for second consecutive game.

Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) took her first conference loss of the year on the mound.

The Marshall/Miami series finale is tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Miami Softball Field.
