Softball Finishes Regular Season With 5-1 Win Over KSU

KENT, Ohio ? The Marshall softball team finished the regular season with 20 MAC wins for the second time in three years by dropping Kent State, 5-1, at the KSU Softball Field in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday.
Dee Tourville (Rescue, Calif.) homered in the second inning to give Marshall the early 1-0 lead.
Kent State would put up a run of its own in its portion of the frame off a Megan Verde solo shot over the rightfield fence to even the scores at one apiece.
Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, Nev.) doubled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and a pinch-hitting Sam Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif.) singled up the middle and off second base to bring Spenia home for a 2-1 score. The game would move to 4-1 a batter later when Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) tallied her second home run of the year.
The Herd put its final score on the board after a Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) bases loaded fielder?s choice scored Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) for the 5-1 win.
Veronica Ralston (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up the win on the mound for Marshall (35-18, 20-4 MAC). Brittney Robinson took the loss for Kent State (25-25, 10-11 MAC). Tourville and J. Williams each had two hits apiece for MU.
With the victory, Marshall successfully captured every series this season in the conference.
The MAC Regular Season Champions will play the Golden Flashes for the fourth consecutive time when it faces the number eight seeded KSU at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the opening round of the MAC Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
