HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team opened the 2005 season in grand fashion, downing Temple, 2-1, Thursday in the WVU Labor Day Shootout at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
Jeremy Ashe (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) had a big day for Marshall, as he scored the game winning goal from 25 yards out at 73:09 of the second half. Ashe also added an assist on a Kirk Gibson (Allen, Texas/Allen) goal in the first half.
"It was a good way to open the season," Marshall head coach Bob Gray said. "We had an unbelievable amount of chances but couldn't seem to put them away, but we are glad to come out with a win. We need to improve and capitalize on our chances and hopefully get another win on Saturday against Campbell."
Marshall grabbed the early lead when Gibson scored from the top of the box at 13:08 and took that lead into the halftime break, but Temple rallied on a James Suevo goal at 63:05 of the second half before Ashe's heroics pushed the Herd to the victory.
Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) was solid in goal for Marshall, recording six saves, including a terrific stop of a Tony Donatelli penalty kick early in the second half.
Marshall returns to action Saturday at the WVU Labor Day Shootout, battling Campbell at 3 p.m.
