HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team earned its first road victory of the season Sunday, knocking off Cleveland State, 5-3, at Krenzler Field. It was a total team effort for the Thundering Herd, as five Marshall players scored goals in the win.
"It was a wild game," Marshall head coach Bob Gray said. "We got off to a slow start in the first half, but we did some good things and turned it on in the second half. I was pleased we were able to get a lot of people in, especially some of our young players. We have a lot of things to work on, but I'm happy to get a win on the road."
Cleveland State (0-3-1) got off to a fast start on a Steve Trapp goal in the 17th minute, but Marshall (2-2) responded in the 31st minute when Jared Dombrowski (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) scored on an assist from Stanton Smith (Cape Town, South Africa/University of Charleston). The teams went to halftime tied at one.
Marshall jumped ahead in the 51st minute on Kirk Gibson's (Allen, Texas/Allen) team-best third goal of the season. He was assisted by Phillip Buffington (Jackson, Miss./Jackson) and Dana Heimbecker (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Westlane Secondary).
After Cleveland State scored to tie the match at two, Marshall put the game away with three-consecutive goals. In the 63rd minute Buffington scored his first career goal on fellow freshman Luke Strimer's (St. Mary's, W.Va./Parkersburg) first career assist. Freshman Osric Flores (Everett, Wash./Cascade) then notched his first career goal before Smith recorded his second goal of the season on an assist from Flores.
Trapp scored for the Vikings in the 83rd minute, but the Herd held on from there for the 5-3 win.
Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and Greg Walter (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) shared time in goal, with each playing a half. Both recorded one save.
Marshall travels to Dayton, Ohio, Friday for the Dayton Invitational. The Herd tangles with Dayton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then returns at noon Sunday to take on Duquesne.
