No. 15 Herd Men’s Soccer Tallies Three Goals in Win over VCU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 15-ranked Marshall Men's Soccer team (2-0-2) scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 win over the VCU Rams on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field.
VCU took advantage of an early mistake by Marshall as Ty Johnson was in alone and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert as he tapped it in the goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
"We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need,"
Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "The way we pass balls is our communication. We make actions on the field, we move in a certain motion. We're always communicating with our teammates around us and I think that communication has moments of pure clarity and moments of confusion. I think we have to ride this out. There's a very good team in there somewhere, but we have to go through the rigors to make sure we gel and get our communication spot on."
However, eight minutes Goncalo Machado left off a pass to Thiago Apolinario. Apolinario then fired off a shot from nearly 40 yards out, catching Manuel Monteiro off guard to tally his third goal of the season and tie the game 1-1.
The Rams threatened throughout the opening 45 minutes, but Obert made a save in the 31st minute to keep the score tied 1-1 at halftime.
Coming out of the break at the 49:26 mark, Joao Roberto took a deflection just outside the 18-yard box and fired home a goal past Monteiro to make it 2-1.
Obert then came up with another pair of key saves in the 59th and 85th minutes to keep the one-goal advantage for the Herd.
Then in the 90th minute, Carl Romberg was in alone off a VCU mistake and tallied the final goal of the game to seal it for MU.
