HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Men's Soccer senior defender Joao Roberto was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office.
Roberto, a converted forward to defensive wingback, picked up a pair of game-winning goals off the bench last week in Marshall road wins at UNCG and at Coastal Carolina.
On Tuesday at UNCG, the native of Santos, Brazil, came on at the 34:19 mark and struck for what would be the eventual game-winner just before halftime at 44:44 to give Marshall a 2-1 lead.
Roberto continued his heroics off the bench on Saturday at Coastal as he played just 29 minutes, but scored with just 2:12 left in the match to give the Herd a 2-1 lead and see his side to three crucial SBC points.
Marshall returns home for a match against SBC leaders James Madison on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.
