HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall Men's Soccer Team (7-2-4, 3-1-2 SBC) collected three points for Sun Belt Conference standings with a 1-0 shutout of the James Madison Dukes on Wednesday night at Hoops Family Field.
"We had to win it," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "We know if we want to win the league, we have to win the next four games to give us a chance."
Late in the contest, it appeared the Dukes scored at the 82:20 mark, but was overturned by VAR for offside. Then in the 84th minute, Gabriel Stevanato sent a cross-pitch pass to Adam N'Goran. N'Goran then took the ball down the left wing of the field. The sophomore then fired a shot as it slipped off JMU goalkeeper Erik Jaspers and into the goal for the game-winner, his second of the season.
Alan Horrocks, the Herd's starting goalkeeper, earned his fourth win of the season. The graduate keeper made key saves in the ninth and 14th minutes to keep James Madison off the board.
Jaspers made a save on an attempt by Carl Romberg in the seventh minute as the two sides were scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, Ramado Pierre-Louis had a shot on goal in the 54th minute and Joao Alves had one in 68th minute, but both attempts were saved by Jaspers.
Horrocks made his third save of the match in 68th minute before N'Goran tallied the game-winning goal.
Marshall outshot JMU 11-6, including 4-3 in shots on goal.
