HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Duquesne Sunday at the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.
The Herd (2-4) took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but the Dukes (4-1) responded with a late goal in the second half, then broke through at the 96:51 mark in overtime on a Tom Sochacki goal to take the win.
Stanton Smith (Cape Town, South Africa/University of Charleston) scored the match's first goal from 18 yards out on an assist from Michael MacDonald (Luton, England/Cardinal Newman) at the 55:37 mark. The goal was Smith's third of the season, tying him with Kirk Gibson (Allen, Texas/Allen) for the team lead.
Duquesne scored the equalizer with just 6:14 remaining in regulation. Noah Salsi took a pass from Steve Mellor and slipped it past Marshall goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and into the lower right corner of the net.
Terhune was solid in goal for the Herd, posting a career-best seven saves. He stopped 13 shots in Marshall's two contests at the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic.
The game was evenly played, as Duquesne posted 14 shots to Marshall's 13. The Dukes put nine of their shots on goal compared to the Herd's six.
