CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Marshall (1-7-0) maintained a one goal advantage for 55 minutes before Charlotte (4-5-0) evened the match and eventually claimed the win by a score of 2-1.
Freshman Jessica Jennings started the scoring against the 49ers 15 minutes into the match, giving the Herd a 1-0 lead. Jennings (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) scored her first career goal at Marshall, the fourth Herd goal this season, off of a cleared corner kick taken by Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington). Charlotte cleared the kick out to the top of the penalty box where Jennings was waiting and was able to place the ball just under the crossbar for the finish.
Marshall held on to the one goal lead until the 72nd minute of play when the 49ers Samantha Mowatt connected off a corner kick taken by Lindsey Beam for the score. Twelve minutes later Nikki Dumencich scored the game winning goal for Charlotte.
The Herd registered five shots, four of which were on goal, while Charlotte logged 14 total goals, seven on goal. Goalkeeper Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) made five saves in the match.
"Today we made people proud, we played with confidence. It was a great effort by our team. We fought really hard and played with a lot of heart. It's unfortunate that we didn't win, but that's the game," Marshall Head Coach Chris Kane said.
Marshall makes one last road swing to Houston, Texas, before returning home on Oct. 7. On Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. the Herd takes on Houston at Roberts Stadium followed by a match at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, with Rice at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
