HOUSTON, Texas- The Marshall women's soccer team fell to Houston, 2-1, Friday in the Conference USA opener at Roberts Stadium. The match was the first C-USA game of the season for both teams.

Houston (6-2-1/1-0-0) started the scoring in the first half of play when Sophia Mundy finished a pass from Brittney Pfeiffer for the goal. Marshall (1-8-0/0-1-0) was unable to balance the score before heading into half time.

Eight minutes into the second half the Cougars found the back of the net again. Mundy capitalized on a mistake made by the Herd in the backfield, but Marshall would not leave the second Houston goal unanswered.

Freshman Courtney Hoover (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) scored off of a pass from fellow freshman Ali Lizotte (Elgin, S.C./Spring Valley) at the 71 minute mark. Lizotte dropped a pass past the Cougar defense for Hoover to finish. The goal and assist were the first points scored by Hoover and Lizotte this season.

Goalkeeper Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) made five saves on the match compared to Houston's two. The Herd was out-shot 15-6 in the match.

"I'm disappointed in the loss, and especially in the Conference USA opener," Marshall Head Coach Chris Kane said. "We had a good effort, but need to fix the mental mistakes. We are going to work on the mental mistakes and come out and play on Sunday."

The Herd will play its second C-USA match on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. central time against Rice (4-7-0/1-0-0) at the Rice Soccer/Track Stadium. The Owls defeated East Carolina 3-0 in their C-USA opener tonight.

Marshall returns to Sam Hood Field on Friday, Oct. 7, at 5:30 p.m. to face UAB in the C-USA home opener.
