HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Trying to break a three-game losing streak, the Marshall women's soccer team faces LaSalle on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7:00 p.m. at Sam Hood Field in the first annual Green and White Invitational. Prior to Marshall's match with LaSalle, Georgia Southern and Morehead State square off to open tournament play. Marshall takes on Georgia Southern on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1:30 p.m. to close out the tournament.
The Explorers and the Herd play for only the second time in program history and one team is looking to pull away with the series lead. In the 2004, the last meeting, the match ended in a 1-1 draw following two overtime periods. LaSalle, Marshall Head Coach Chris Kane's alma mater, enters the match with an overall record of 1-3-0.
Georgia Southern (1-3-0) will face Morehead State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before playing Marshall on Sunday. The Eagles took the all-time series lead, 1-0, when they defeated the Herd 3-0 in 1998. So far this season, the single win for the Eagles came against North Florida, while their losses were handed down from Winthrop, Georgia and Mercer.
In its last action the Herd lost two games, to Evansville and Samford, during its opening road trip of the season in the Long's Electronic Samford Classic. On Friday, Sept. 2, Marshall faced Evansville for the first time since 2002 and fell by a score of 2-0. The following Sunday Marshall faced Samford for the first time in program history. The undefeated Bulldogs took the decision with a winning score of 2-0.
Senior goalkeeper Kai Nordness and senior defender Jaime Gruber were named to the Long's Electronic Samford Classic All-Tournament team.
Marshall women's soccer is participating in the "Bring a Buck" campaign aiding the victims of Hurricane Katrina. All fans are asked to bring at least $1 to be collected by student-athletes and other members of the student body during the match. The proceeds will be turned over to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
During every Marshall home match, t-shirts and coupons from Dominos Pizza will be handed out and at halftime Firestone will be sponsoring a "kick to win" promotion. Ten lucky students will be eligible to compete for the grand prize, a new set of tires valued at $400, to be given out at halftime of the Oct. 23 match against Tulsa. As with all Marshall women's soccer events, admission is free to the public.
