BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team was victorious in its doubleheader Tuesday night at the Huntington Tennis Club as it took a 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky and swept Youngstown State, 7-0 in the nightcap.
Marshall improved to 4-1 with the wins as EKU dropped to 2-1 and Youngstown fell to 1-2 on the year.
"It was good to get two wins and to get back out on the court," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "I was impressed with both EKU and Youngstown, they were both very fiesty teams and came in and gave us two tough matches."
Marshall swept the doubles point in both matches to get things going and then followed through by taking 11 of 12 singles matches on the night.
Against Eastern Kentucky, Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt were 8-0 victors over Ina Durcakova and Jemma Evers at the No. 1 position. Karolina Soor and Shannon Brown pulled off an 8-4 win on court two against Terin Roof and Meredith Giles and Jeanne Schwartz and Jessica Keener finished things off in doubles with an 8-0 win over Lucia Vojtkova and Kim Underdonk at No. 3.
In singles, Kever won 6-2, 6-1 over Giles at No. 1, Schmitt fought to a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) win at No. 2 in a third-set tiebreaker over Vojtkova, Soor won 6-1, 6-2 against Evers, Holly Asel took a 6-2, 6-0 decision versus Roof and Keener was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the No. 6 spot topping Underdonk. For the Colonels, Durcakova picked up EKU's only win on the evening with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) win over Jeanne Schwartz at No. 3.
"Eastern Kentucky keeps getting better and better each year that we play them," Mercer said. "They are a very good opponent that challenged us and will help us get better as the year goes on."
Against Youngstown State, Kever and Schmitt rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Allison Day and Gina Peretti, Soor and Brown defeated Emily Thayer and N. Haralambopulous, 8-3, on court two and Schwartz and Keener took an 8-6 decision to round things out over Michelle Fulukey and Whitney Thomas from the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Kever downed Thomas 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and Schmitt took a 6-0, 6-4 decision from the No. 2 spot against Peretti. Also for the Herd, Soor was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Thayer, Schwartz defeated Day 6-4, 6-1, Brown took care of Haralambopulous 6-3, 6-2 and Asel capped the days action with a 7-5, 6-1 win to close out the night and the sweep of the Penguins for the Herd.
Marshall will now have a break until Pittsburgh and Morehead State come to town on Feb. 11 because Saturday's match at Virginia has been changed to Feb. 22 because of a scheduling conflict on the Cavaliers part.
