Marshall Football Hosts Memphis Saturday

HUNTINGTON - Marshall returns to Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Saturday for a Homecoming game with Memphis. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m and the game will be televised by West Virginia Media (WOWK -TV in the Charleston and Huntington market).

Marshall is 53-43-8 all-time in homecoming games and has won 13 straight homecoming games. Marshall first played a "homecoming" game on Nov. 28, 1895 and has what is believed to be one of the oldest "homecoming" traditions in all of college football.

The 2006 MU Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be inducted on Friday night and introduced during the game on Saturday. Elected to the HOF this year are Bill Craig (baseball), Charles "Chuck" Henry (football), Rick Huckabay (basketball coach), Arnold "Scott" Jackson (soccer), Randy Moss (football) and Judy Southard (women's basketball coach. Due to NFL commitments Moss is unable to attend and will be inducted at a later date.

1971 team member Reggie Oliver and actor Arlen Escarpeta, who portrays Oliver in the "We Are Marshall" movie will be in attendance and serve as Homecoming Parade Grand Marshals earlier in the day.

The Thundering Herd has played five of its first seven games on the road and is now entering its first and only stretch of back to back home games this season.

Marshall (2-5, 1-2 C-USA) is coming off of a 31-24 win at UAB on Saturday night. The Thundering Herd used an amazing 242 yard and two touchdown rushing performance from junior standout Ahmad Bradshaw and timely defense down the stretch to pick up the victory.

Bradshaw's 242 yards against UAB were the third highest single game rushing total in school history. The Thundering Herd standout currently leads Conference USA and ranks 8th in the nation in rushing with 123.29 yards per game.

Memphis (1-6, 0-3 C-USA) has lost five straight following a 35-14 loss to defending C-USA Champion Tulsa last week. The Tigers have had a difficult schedue to contend with and losses to SEC members Ole Miss and Tennessee are on their slate.

The Tigers are led by junior quarterback Martin Hankins who has thrown for1,487 yards and 12 touchdowns while completing 62.4% of his passes.

Last season, in the first meeting between the two schools, Memphis took a 26-3 win at the Liberty Bowl to become bowl eligible. The Tigers went on to win the Motor City Bowl (38-31) over Akron.
