PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Marshall University's Kellie Schmitt was defeated Thursday by third-ranked Theresa Logar of Stanford at the ITA All-American's main draw.
Lugar, a 2006 NCAA semifinalist and top player for the 2006 NCAA Champion, opened up the match with a 6-1 first set victory. But Schmitt would battle back in the second set, winning it 6-4. Marshall head coach John Mercer said Schmitt displayed how good her game really is.
"We are just out here with the tennis powers of the world and Kellie was showing them we have pretty good tennis in Huntington, W. Va. too," he said.
Schmitt took a lead in the third and final set but was unable to hang on to the victory as Logar rallied taking the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Mercer said the match could have been won but Logar is ranked No. 3 for a reason.
"The match really came down to just a couple of point," he said. "It's always disappointing to lose, but she gave a great effort and we couldn't ask for anymore.
Even thought Schmitt was defeated she will still be playing in the tournament's back draw against more top-notch competition.
"She has won enough matches for people to notice she's been playing at a high level," Mercer said. "Tomorrow would be another really good win if she can get it."
Friday she will be facing No. 65 Iva Gersic of New Mexico at noon EDT.
