TULSA, Okla. - The Marshall men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback at Tulsa Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane posted a goal in the 37th minute, then kept the Thundering Herd at bay the rest of the way to notch the shutout.
Marshall (3-6-1, 0-2 C-USA) controlled play for much of the match and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal, but the Herd was unable to get one past Tulsa goalkeeper Tyrel Lacey, who posted his second-consecutive shutout. Tulsa held an 11-10 edge overall in shots. Michael MacDonald (Sr., Luton, England) recorded five shots, including three on goal, for the Herd.
"In the second half we pressed them, controlled things and had several point-blank chances but just couldn't finish," Marshall head coach Bob Gray said. "We are having some problems finishing right now, but we played pretty well and it's disappointing to not come out with at least a draw."
The Golden Hurricane (5-7, 3-1) scored the match's lone goal at the 36:17 mark. After a corner kick, Chris Clements punched in a short shot past Marshall goalkeeper Greg Walter (So., Slippery Rock, Pa.). He was assisted by Eric Burkholder.
Marshall was playing its first match in two weeks after its game last Saturday at home against UCF was postponed. The Herd last played Sept. 23 at UAB, marking Marshall's longest in-season break between games in program history, topping 10-day breaks during the1980 and 2001 seasons.
Marshall begins a three-game homestand at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Florida International.
