HUNTINGTON - For the last quarter century, give or take a few years, Marshall University's athletic trainers and managers have met on the gridiron for an annual epic battle known simply as the "Turkey Bowl." On Wednesday, the tradition continued with a stunning 14-7 training staff victory over the managers at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in what may be the lowest scoring flag football game in history.
"It was an incredible defensive effort by both teams," Marshall trainers quarterback Josh Signs said. "It was especially sweet to win considering the history between the two sides."
Wednesday's victory marked only the second win ever for the trainers over the managers. The training staff recorded its first ever win two years ago and now has won two of the last three meetings against their hated rivals.
The trainers connected on a Ryan Sissle to Matt McKinney touchdown pass for their first score and then added another on a Josh Signs to Jeremy Fuller TD pass with only one minute to go. The medics then iced the game when Sissle intercepted a pass with just 15 seconds to play. For his efforts, Sissle was named the game's MVP and his name will go down in sports medicine history for pulling the upset.
According to sources, the trainers stunning upsurge over the last few years is not sitting well with several prominent equipment room alumni. If that is the case, head equipment manager Rich Worner may be feeling some outside pressure if the managers cannot turn the tide in the coming years.
