ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -Quinton Day scored 23 points and set a tournament record for 3-pointers made as Missouri-Kansas City defeated Marshall 79-75 Saturday for seventh place in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
Day hit 18 3-pointers for his three tournament games, two more than the record, and made 6 of 10 against Marshall. He also had eight assists against Marshall.
UMKC (3-3) missed its first seven shots as the Thundering Herd raced to a 10-0 lead. After a time-out, the Kangaroos came back with an 18-4 run behind two 3-pointers by Tim Blackwell and three baskets by Brent Stephens to lead 18-14 with 11:16 remaining. Day hit a 3-pointer and 49 seconds left and a jumper from behind the free throw line as time expired to give UMKC a 42-34 halftime lead.
Marshall (1-4) hit 5 of 10 3-pointers to open the second half and took the lead 60-59 when Darryl Merthie hit one with 9:37 remaining. But with the Thundering Herd leading 62-61 less than a minute later, Dane Brumagin and Day hit 3s and the Kangaroos made free throws in the closing minutes to hold off Marshall.
Brent Stephens had 14 points for UMKC.
Mark Dorris led Marshall with 24 points and Tre Whitted added 14.
