HUNTINGTON - The Marshall men's basketball team returns to the Henderson Center court Friday night for a match up with Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green in a 7 p.m. game. The contest is the first of three consecutive home games for the Thundering Herd over the next 12 days.
Marshall (3-7) and Bowling Green (6-3) will meet for the 54th time Friday night in the Henderson Center, with the Falcons leading the series, 29-24. The Herd's first meeting with the Falcons came on January 23, 1954, when Marshall defeated BGSU, 91-88, in Huntington. Fourty-four of the 53 meetings took place when Marshall was a member of the Mid-American Conference, and Friday's contest will be the tenth non-conference meeting between the two schools. Bowling Green has won two straight over the Thundering Herd, dating back to the 2002-03 season - the last time Marshall defeated Bowling Green was on February 8, 2003, in Huntington, 56-54. In the Henderson Center, Marshall is 3-3 all-time vs. the Falcons.
Marshall is coming off of a 61-45 loss at Princeton on December 16. Senior guard Chris Ross (San Antonio, Texas) scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Thundering Herd. Princeton mounted a seven-point lead at the half, and never looked back the rest of the way.
Bowling Green enters the game with a 6-3 record after defeating Northern Colorado, 63-53, on Tuesday night at Anderson Arena. Falcon guard Martin Samarco, a 2nd team All-MAC member in 2005-06, leads Bowling Green, averaging 22.4 points per game. Forward Erik Marschall, who will miss tonight's game with a broken foot, is the only other Falcon player averaging double figures with 11.8 points per game.
The next three Marshall games will be played in the Henderson Center. The Herd plays Bowling Green this Friday, and then takes on Virginia Tech (12/30), and Ohio (1/3) in the first two games after the holiday break.
Sophomore forward Markel Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.) leads the Herd with 13.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Senior forward Travis Aikens (Orlando, Fla.) has also had a good start to the 2006-07 campaign, averaging 13.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Henderson Center. Marshall football season ticket holders may redeem their Christmas Cards they received from the Thundering Herd Ticket Office for a free ticket for the season ticket holder and a guest to the game. Season ticket holders are to present their Christmas Cards, which will be used as a ticket, at the gate for free admission.
The game can be heard live regionally on the ISP/Thundering Herd Network or on the worldwide web at www.HerdZone.com. Fans can also watch a live stream of the game as a part of Herd All-Access on www.HerdZone.com.
